I would never support “Work Choices” or anything like it. The rights of workers must be genuinely protected, for instance their right to a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work must be enshrined in award safety nets. Moreover they must be allowed to bargain collectively and be protected by sensible unfair dismissal laws. Having said that, I’m a small business operator myself and recognise the great importance such enterprises have in the Australian and Tasmanian economies. Laws should always strike the right balance between protecting workers and enabling commercial success.
The National Broadband Network will genuinely provide essential infrastructure for Australia’s future economic and social prosperity. It must be allowed to proceed.
The most profitable companies should pay more tax on those profits. But the Rudd Government’s Resource Super Profit Tax was recklessly constructed, especially regarding retrospectivity, threshold and rate. The replacement Minerals Resource Rent Tax also seems far from perfect in its detail and more work will be needed if it is to function well. In both cases the policy appears to have been developed too quickly.
I’m not doing a preference deal with any party - to do so would undermine my independence and be disrespectful to my many supporters from across the political spectrum. What I am doing is asking voters to give me their number one vote and remember to number the remaining boxes on the ballot paper in the order of their preference (to ensure their vote is valid). If I’m unsuccessful their vote will go to their number two selection and so on.
